Choosing them produces a story, even before the captions are written. This opinion piece argues that selection criteria should be visible so readers can understand what has been included and what remains absent.

An archive is shaped by access, preservation and editorial judgement. A transparent account acknowledges these conditions. The sample essay does not claim to solve them; it shows how a publication could invite a more precise conversation about its own decisions.

Looking beyond the surface

The distinction matters because an editorial platform is also a record of decisions. A headline chooses a frame; a caption chooses which details to name. Making those choices visible helps readers decide how much weight to place on a story and where further questions are needed. In this demonstration, no statement should be read as reported evidence about an actual person or organisation.

For an editor preparing a real version of this article, the next step would be to identify appropriate contributors and source material, agree permissions and test the central questions against documented experience. The language of the piece would then be revised to reflect what the evidence supports. A compelling narrative does not remove the need for attribution.

Context and connections

The accompanying Index entry shows how the same subject could be encountered through a reference profile. Structured names, locations, disciplines and material terms offer another route into the subject, while explicit related-record IDs connect it with journalism. Those links demonstrate discovery, not verification or endorsement.

This sample closes with an open question: what would become clearer if the reader could see the decisions behind the object as well as its final appearance? A production story might answer with interviews, archival material or observation. Here, the question remains a prompt for the client’s design review.

Original fictional scenario for design review.
